mixed system A special type of digital system that contains both digital line
controllers (TPLC) and analog line controllers (VPLC).
Internally, a mixed system uses an 8K Hz PCM format for audio data
speech and recording, which is the same format used in digital
telephony. Mixed systems are configurable for both T1 and E1
telephone networks, and are comparable in performance to standard
digital systems, having similar line capacities, resource capabilities,
and data throughput.
The VPLCs in a mixed system provide analog-to-digital conversion
of audio data. This is done using PRO-2000 boards installed on the
VPLCs. All voice input/output operations in mixed systems are done
through TPLCs. In most configurations, each analog line in a mixed
system replaces the resource utilization of one digital line. Because of
this internal sharing of resources, mixed system configurations have
certain limitations.
For applications, there are no special considerations for mixed
systems. Applications associated with digital lines function as if they
were in a pure digital system; applications on analog lines function as
if they were in an analog environment.
