Compacting File Space
When you delete a file from a memory card, the file and its data become
inaccessible and eventually occupy all remaining storage space on that card. Use
the
compact command to
• Copy active files to memory
• Erase the card’s contents
• Copy the active files back to the memory card
If responses to the
dir or dinfo commands reveal more free space than contiguous
free space on a memory card, compacting the space on the card increases the
contiguous free space.
Enter the following to erase the memory card contents and rewrite its files, where
<vol>
is the slot number of the card:
compact
<vol>
:
The following message appears:
Compacting file system on volume <vol>:...
This may take several minutes...Please wait...
100% Complete
Compaction completed
The space is compacted when the Technician Interface prompt reappears.
Caution: Back up the files by copying them to a second memory card before
issuing the
compact command.
