Authenticating the Password on a Version 2 Update
By default, RIP running in RIP Version 2 mode does not authenticate the
password on incoming updates. RIP checks for the presence of a password:
• If no password is present, RIP accepts the update.
• If a password is present, RIP drops the update.
With authentication enabled, RIP drops all received Version 1 updates and
processes only Version 2 updates in the following manner:
• If no password is present in the Version 2 update, RIP drops the update.
• If a password is present in the Version 2 update and that password is valid,
RIP accepts the update.
• If the password is invalid, RIP drops the update.
You can use the BCC or Site Manager to configure a RIP interface for
authentication and enable password checking. If you configure authentication on
an IP interface, you can assign a 1-to-16 character password to the interface.
