VTCPD Features User Manual
Monitoring Host Connections
In case a host process fails, the kernel on the host machine notifies Avaya VTCPD,
which sends a hostdown condition to applications. However, Avaya VTCPD is not
notified if the entire host machine crashes or if the LAN connection is broken. To
detect this situation, Avaya VTCPD must query the host periodically with a ping
command. If a reply is not received within a specified amount of time, Avaya VTCPD
determines that the host is down.
Backup LAN
To ensure continued host connectivity, Avaya VTCPD supports the use of a backup
LAN between the node(s) and host machines. Avaya VTCPD switches to the backup
LAN if host connections through the primary LAN are lost. For multiple hosts and
port numbers, repeat the option for each host/port number.
Monitoring Host Connections
vtcpd -T <timeout>[:<ping-len>] -h len:<str>
Args: -T <timeout>
[:<ping-len>]
Specifies that a ping message is to be sent to the
host every ping-len seconds. (The default is 3.)
If a reply is not received within timeout number
of seconds, the host is deemed to be down.
-h len:<str> Specifies the format of the ping message. For
message formats using delimiters or length
headers (see Message Format on page 46) the
length of the ping message can be equal to zero
(in which case, only the header or delimiter is sent
to the host. The str option is ignored). For fixed-
length format, the length of the ping message
cannot be zero, but can be smaller than the length
of the message specified by the -f option. If str
is not specified, the ping message is filled with
ASCII '0' (e.g., -h4, -h4:0 and
-h4:0000 are equivalent). To specify an
unprintable character, the hexadecimal
representation (0xXX) should be used.
Examples: vtcpd -T 30:10 -h 4:0x00
Generates a ping message every 10 seconds with a total timeout of 30
seconds. The message consists of four binary zeroes.
vtcpd -T 20:5 -h 4:A0x410x42B
Generates a ping message every 5 seconds with a total timeout of 20
seconds. The message is the string "AABB".
