If the conversion fails, a message indicates that the convert.exe utility was

unable to convert your conﬁg ﬁle due to errors it detected in that ﬁle. In this

case, perform the following troubleshooting steps:

a. Try again to transfer your Version 5 conﬁguration ﬁle from the router

to the workstation or PC using TFTP.

b. Try again to convert the ﬁle using the convert.exe utility.

If this proves unsuccessful, use Site Manager to build a new (Version 10.0)

conﬁguration ﬁle for the router you want to upgrade.

Task 3: Customizing a Converted Conﬁguration File

After you convert a conﬁguration ﬁle, you must use the Conﬁguration Manager to

re-identify or re-establish the router’s hardware conﬁguration in the resulting

Version 7.56 conﬁg ﬁle. You do this by restoring the deﬁnitions of any link

modules, circuits, protocols, ﬁlters, or other features not mapped automatically by

convert.exe into your Version 7.56 conﬁguration ﬁle. The Conﬁguration Manager

reassociates the circuit and protocol conﬁgurations that existed on those link

modules and slots in the router you are upgrading.

After you re-establish the hardware conﬁguration in the converted conﬁguration

ﬁle, you must

• Add an IP interface to the conﬁguration ﬁle if it does not already contain one.

• Verify (and, if necessary, adjust) Version 7.56 default settings in the ﬁle.

• Add any Point-to-Point circuits deleted just prior to ﬁle conversion.

• Upgrade any Frame Relay circuits in the conﬁguration.

• Create trafﬁc ﬁlters, if appropriate, for the conﬁguration and location of the

router in your network.

• Inspect the ﬁle and make any other corrections you deem necessary.

You also use the Conﬁguration Manager to enhance your converted and redeﬁned

conﬁguration ﬁle with new features.
