Chapter 1
Starting SNMP, RMON, BOOTP,
DHCP, and RARP Services
This chapter tells you how to start SNMP, BOOTP, DHCP, and RARP services
and configure them on an IP interface using the default parameter values. It also
describes how to start RMON (remote monitoring) for data collection by enabling
the Ethernet data collection module (DCM) with a default configuration.
SNMP, BOOTP, DHCP, and RARP services all use the Internet Protocol (IP) for
message transport. To use any of them on a router interface, you must enable IP
services on that interface.
For detailed background information about these protocols and how they work,
refer to Chapter 2. For information on how to customize these protocols by
changing their default values, refer to Chapters 3 through 7. For information about
changing the default settings, refer to Appendix A.
Before You Begin
Before you can start SNMP, RMON, BOOTP, DHCP, and RARP services on a
router, you must
• Create and save a configuration file
• Retrieve the configuration file in local, remote, or dynamic mode
• Specify router hardware if this is a local-mode configuration
If you have any questions about how to perform any of these preliminary tasks,
refer to
Configuring Routers
.
