Configuring a Summary Route
Border routers generate summary advertisements for their attached areas. Each
summary advertisement specifies a range of destinations in an area. An area range
specification consists of a network address and a variable-length mask. For
example, a summary advertisement for the destination 140.191.0.0 with a mask of
255.255.0.0 describes a single route to the collection of destinations 140.191.0.0
to 140.191.255.255. When a packet is forwarded, it is always forwarded to the
network that is the best (longest or most specific) match for the packet’s
destination.
You can use the BCC or Site Manager to configure a summary route.
Using the BCC
Navigate to the area-specific prompt and enter:
summary network
<ip_address>
mask
<ip_mask>
ip_address
and
ip_mask
are an IP address/mask pair defining the summary route.
For example, the following command sequence creates the summary route
140.191.0.0 with a mask of 255.0.0.0:
area/0.0.0.1#
summary network 140.191.0.0 mask 255.0.0.0
summary/0.0.0.1/140.191.0.0#
By default, OSPF advertises the summary route. To change the setting, navigate to
the summary-specific prompt and enter:
